Should you replace only bearings or the complete rotor?
Replacing only the bearings can be a cost-effective dental handpiece repair option, but important technical factors should be considered before choosing this approach.
Why bearing replacement is not always enough
While replacing bearings may reduce immediate repair costs, it does not address wear in other critical rotor components:
- Manufacturers generally do not certify bearing only replacement procedures
- Chuck mechanisms have a limited lifespan and lose retention strength with continuous operation and repeated sterilization cycles
A rotor rebuilt with only new bearings and O-rings may not retain the bur with the same holding force as a new replacement rotor. In some cases, reduced chuck retention can further develop shortly after repair, increasing the risk of bur ejection during operation.
Which Repair Option Is Better?
The correct solution depends entirely on the condition of the rotor. A professional evaluation is required to determine whether the rotor can be safely rebuilt or whether replacement is the more appropriate long-term solution.
How V&KL Evaluates Rotor Condition
Before recommending any repair, each handpiece and rotor is individually inspected by a V&KL technician. Critical wear points evaluated during inspection include:
- Overall condition and appearance

- Bearing condition
- Impeller wear
- Chuck retention strength
This inspection determines whether the rotor can be reliably rebuilt or whether full replacement is advisable.
Our Recommendation
In most cases, we prefer to replace the complete rotor rather than only bearings.
A complete rotor replacement typically provides:
- Better long-term reliability
- Improved bur retention and chuck performance
- More consistent handpiece performance
- Reduced risk of repeat repairs
However, if inspection confirms that the rotor remains structurally sound, rebuilding by replacing bearings and o-rings may still be a suitable repair option.
Need Expert Advice?
Every handpiece wears differently. The right repair decision should be based on the actual technical condition of the rotor not assumptions alone.
